Sculptra vs Radiesse Vancouver: Biostimulator Guide

Biostimulators have become one of the most talked about categories in facial aesthetics and the two names that come up most often are Sculptra and Radiesse. Both stimulate your own collagen rather than simply adding volume, but they behave quite differently. Here's how to think about Sculptra vs Radiesse.

What is a biostimulator?

Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, which adds volume immediately and can be dissolved, a biostimulator works by prompting your skin to produce more of its own collagen over time. The product itself is gradually broken down and absorbed; what remains is the collagen your body built. That means results appear gradually - usually over weeks to months - rather than the same day. With that being said, biostimulators an advanced injection treatment because it cannot be dissolved.

Sculptra: poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)

Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible material that has been used in dissolvable sutures for decades. Once injected, it acts as a scaffold that triggers a gradual collagen response.

  • Best for: generalized loss of facial volume and skin quality - hollow temples, flattening cheeks, crepey texture.
  • Timeline: results build gradually. Most treatment plans involve a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart.
  • Feel: soft and diffuse rather than structural - it improves overall fullness instead of sculpting a sharp edge.
  • Aftercare note: massage of the treated area is typically recommended after Sculptra. Your injector will explain the schedule.

Radiesse: calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. It gives some immediate lift from the gel itself, then stimulates collagen as the carrier is absorbed.

  • Best for: areas that benefit from structure and firmness - jawline definition, cheek support, and (when diluted) skin tightening on the neck, décolletage or hands.
  • Timeline: some immediate effect, with collagen-driven improvement continuing over the following months.
  • Feel: firmer and more supportive than Sculptra.

Sculptra vs Radiesse: the short version

  • Choose Sculptra when the goal is gradual, global restoration of volume and skin quality across larger areas.
  • Choose Radiesse when the goal is definition, lift and firmness in a specific area - or diluted skin tightening.
  • Neither is reversible in the way hyaluronic acid filler is, which is exactly why injector experience and conservative placement matter.
  • Many treatment plans combine a biostimulator with filler or neuromodulator, because they solve different problems.

Who isn't a good candidate?

Biostimulators aren't suitable for everyone. Active skin infection in the area, certain autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, a history of keloid scarring, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and known allergies to product components are all reasons to pause. A full medical history is part of any responsible assessment.

FAQs

How long do Sculptra and Radiesse results last?

Both are considered longer-lasting than most hyaluronic acid fillers, with results commonly reported over a period of roughly two years, though individual longevity varies with metabolism, area treated and how much product was used.

Can biostimulators be dissolved if I don't like the result?

No. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, there is no reversal agent for PLLA or CaHA. This is a key reason to treat conservatively and choose an experienced injector.

Can I have a biostimulator and filler at the same time?

Often yes, though they may be staged across separate appointments depending on the areas involved. Your injector will map out the sequencing.

How soon will I see a difference?

Radiesse offers some immediate effect from its gel carrier; Sculptra is gradual by design. In both cases, the collagen-driven change is what develops over the following months.
